Ghana Week Celebration At The VGS 2023

Greetings, fellow adventurers! Victoria Grammar School just wrapped up an epic week of celebrating Ghana and its rich cultural heritage. From exploring the bustling streets of Accra to venturing out into the beautiful countryside, our students had a blast experiencing all that this amazing country has to offer. One of the highlights of the week was a mapped bus ride through certain streets of Accra. Our students were able to see some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Jubilee House, Independence Square, and the Makola Market. It was an incredible opportunity to see Ghana’s capital city up close and personal. Another exciting adventure was a trip to the Tema Harbour and other key sites in Tema. Students in Years 2 and 3 had an amazing time touring the harbor in a bus and exploring some of the area’s most interesting attractions. But it wasn’t all about sightseeing and exploration. Our students also had the chance to experience some of Ghana’s amazing cultural traditions. We enjoyed a preschool cultural dance show and a drama by our amazing teachers, featuring the legendary Ananse and the Yam Hills. And of course, we couldn’t forget about Ghana’s Independence Day! Our students celebrated the country’s 66th anniversary with an epic parade that left everyone feeling proud and patriotic. All in all, Ghana Week was an incredible experience that our students will never forget. It was a chance to learn about this amazing country, its people, and its culture, all while having fun and making memories that will last a lifetime. Cyber Security Awareness Day

As the cyber world keeps expanding, parents and children need to be mindful of lurking threats. A team from KPMG Ghana visited The Victoria Grammar School to educate students on cyber security. Our students were empowered with knowledge on the need to protect their online identity. They learnt that not everything on the internet is true and they must always stay safe. Parents must be aware of their childrens’ online presence and remind them that their digital footprints remain forever; is visible to others and must be protected.

Ghana @ 65 “The Untold Stories”

Ghana is a beautiful country with cultures, history, and stories that make us who we are as a people. This year the school commemorated Ghana’s 65th anniversary with activities based on the theme “The Untold Stories”. Meet Africa’s Spider-Man, Kweku Anansi, the great story teller! He’s the main character in West African folklore. His stories are part of our rich, Ghanaian oral tradition. Stories of Anansi were shared from the memories of elders of the community, or grandparents and parents and told to children. Because of this type of storytelling, Anansi and his adventures have been able to survive for hundreds of years. Behind each Anansi tale is a lesson, or a value. This is known as a trickster tale. When a lot of us see tie-dye, we think of hippies and 60’s culture, but did you know that it has long been a practice in Africa? From Ghana to the Gambia, tie-dyeing is one of the many ways that African artisans like to express their style and diversity, and this ties us together as one people. The stories of the origins of these cultures were inculcated in students. Students made beautiful tie-dye attires they wore to celebrate our Ghanaian Heritage and culture. Traditional leadership and chieftaincy are paramount to governing local Ghanaian communities and as part of our celebrations, we hosted the wise Queen Mother of the Ve Traditional Area in the Afadjato South of the Volta Region by name, Mama Afia Kumma II.  She spoke about responsibility, discipline, focus, amongst many others. She also taught students how to make and clean a calabash locally. Friday, 4th March was the grand event that crowned the Ghana Week Celebrations. The occasion was graced with the presence of Lieutenant Derick Kofi Opoku a Medical Laboratory Scientist at 37 Military Hospital. Our commander, Zhara Wuntumi conducted the parade beautifully and left all present in awe. The event was crowned with a parade from all students, staff, and even parents. This was a clear representation of the various individuals from all walks of life in the Ghanaian community; our Solidarity, Freedom, and Justice.
