My Summer Holiday

At The VGS, students explore various ways of presenting data. Instead of the traditional essay about their holiday, these are their unique presentations.

A Trip to Nzulezu

About the Village

On the western coast of Ghana, near the border with Cote d’Ivoire, is a village that is unique in all of Ghana. It has a spectacular scenery of the 400-year-old stilt propped water settlement of Nzulezu. The unique village is built on stilts in Lake Tadane, which is home to hundreds of people in the Western Region.

Nzulezu is an Nzema word meaning ‘surface of water’. The inhabitants of the village are said to have migrated from Walata, a city in the ancient Ghana Empire, the earliest of the western Sudanese States, According to tradition, ancestors of the village were brought to their present place by a snail.

On the journey to Nzulezu we went on a boat over Lake Tadane which is about 35 feet deep. I visited the school there which is from class 1-6 and in order to continue to JHS, students need to use a boat to the main Island. The ride can take about 1 hour on a boat with no motor connected to. The wood used on the houses have been refined so that you can use them for more than 25 years.
